More about Franc D'Ambrosio, Broadway and movie star
Best-known for his impressive portrayal of the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical, The Phantom of the Opera, Franc D’Ambrosio performed as the famed masked man more than 2,100 times. Affectionately known as the “Iron Man of the Mask,” Franc held the title of “The World’s Longest-Running Phantom” for more than a decade after bringing over five million theater-goers to their feet in a 5-1/2-year run.
Audiences also recognize Franc from his performance as Anthony Vito Corleone, the opera-singing son of Al Pacino’s character in Godfather III. He sang the iconic Academy Award-winning theme "Speak Softly Love" in both the film and on the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. In 1974, Nino Rota’s haunting Godfather theme won an Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score. The re-released film returns to the big screen this winter. Franc remains the first and only person ever to perform a vocal version of the song in the film’s trilogy.
Franc has performed in countless Broadway and solo touring productions, and sung live in national television specials featuring Brian Boitano and Kristi Yamaguchi. In 2000, Barry Manilow, personally selected him for the lead role of “Tony” in the pre-Broadway tour of Copacabana based on Manilow’s hit song, earning Franc a National Theatre Award nomination for Best Male Performer in a Musical. In May 2018, Franc was honored to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the third annual Cannes Global Short Film Awards Gala during the 71st Annual Cannes Film Festival. In March 2020, he began rehearsals for the World Premiere of ORFEUS: A House Music Opera! at the Young Vic Theatre in London, a performance now rescheduled to a future date. When not performing in major productions, Franc tours internationally with his solo shows and The Four Phantoms in Concert.
Receiving a distinct honor different from a Broadway or film accolade, on February 3, 2020, Franc was knighted by order of the President of the Republic of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, in a private ceremony at the Italian Consulate in San Francisco. Franc now holds the official title "Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia," the highest honor the Italian government can bestow on a foreigner, conferred upon Italian expatriates who have greatly contributed to the preservation of the Italian spirit, culture and national prestige abroad.
