About The Event

Fire & Grace is an electric collaboration between Grammy award-winning guitarist, William Coulter and Canadian baroque/modern violinist Edwin Huizinga.

Together, on tour and in their recordings, these virtuoso artists explore the musical landscape of folk, classical, and contemporary traditions from around the world. North American folk refrains mingle with Celtic melodies, Argentinian tangos compliment Bach sonatas, and Bulgarian kopanitsas contrast with fiddle tunes and waltzes. All are underscored by a sense of discovery in the elements of passion and virtuosity – the fire and grace – found in these diverse musical traditions.

About the Artists

Edwin Huizinga

Performing both baroque and modern repertoire, Canadian violinist Edwin Huizinga has crossed many borders and boundaries as an artist around the world. He has appeared alongside Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Dawn Upshaw, Mike Marshall, and Stevie Wonder, and has been featured as a soloist with the the Sweetwater Music Festival, the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, and the Banff Summer Arts Festival. Huizinga is a founding member of Fire & Grace and ACRONYM, a world-renowned baroque ensemble, which gives him the opportunity to share modern baroque premieres, new arrangements, and compositions with the musical community. He is also a founding member of the Classical Revolution–an organization dedicated to shaping the future of concerts and jam sessions in alternative locations around the world–which evolved from his time at the San Franciso Conservatory of Music. Huizinga has recently become the Artistic Director of the Sweetwater Music Festival in Ontario, Canada and is also on the Artistic Leadership team of the Carmel Bach Festival.

William Coulter

William Coulter is an internationally acclaimed, Grammy award winning master of the steel-string guitar. Collaborations have been a mainstay of his career including tours and recordings with Gourd Music artists Neal Hellman and Barry and Shelley Phillips, classical guitar virtuoso Benjamin Verdery, and Irish flute wizard Brian Finnegan. Fire & Grace tours with baroque/modern/folk violinist Edwin Huizinga have taken him across the continent and to Ireland, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Coulter has served as Music Director for Tomaseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas since 1998. He has performed with the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, Apollo’s Fire and many other ensembles; in 2016, he debuted his full lenth pops concert, Celtic Journey with the Omaha Symphony, singers, dancers, Celtic musicians, and a story teller. Coulter teaches classical guitar at UC Santa Cruz, various summer camps, and festivals. His latest solo CD, The Rolling Waves, is a collection of original music and his folk music arrangements from the Celtic lands and beyond. Coulter earned degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the university of hard knocks.
