About The Event

2023 marks the 106th anniversary of the birth of America’s “First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald.

In a swingin’ evening of song and stories, noted chanteuse Amanda King shares the fascinating tale of Ella Fitzgerald's triumph over adversity to become one of the greatest singers of all time. A vivacious, captivating entertainer, Amanda and her band will feature many of Ella’s classic numbers, including “Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen,” “Take the A Train,” “Caravan,” “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” “Mack The Knife,” “Someone To Watch Over Me” and many more favorites from Ella's early career and Songbook series.

King can swing with the best and handle a lovely ballad with delicate phrasing and smooth arrangements. — Cabaret Scenes

King is Queen. — Jon Katsilometes, Las Vegas Review Journal

Hearing King do anything is a treat. Hearing her do Fitzgerald should be something special. — David Wiegand, SF Chronicle

About the Artists

Amanda King is a straight-ahead chanteuse who performs swinging standards and jazz classics. Hailed by critic Stephen Holden in the New York Times as one of the nightclub world’s “exceptional rising talents,” Amanda is a vivacious and captivating performer bringing to mind the great ladies of song. An historic preservationist, Amanda relishes diving into history by sharing the stories, songs and people that make up the treasure trove of pre-1950's American popular music. She was a long-time San Francisco resident, performing in venues from the Venetian Room and Herbst Theater to Yoshi’s and Feinstein’s at the Nikko before relocating to Las Vegas in 2017 and quickly becoming one of its top jazz singers. Dedicated to music education as well as performance, Amanda taught in the SFJAZZ Discover Jazz series and now teaches jazz history classes for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Patrick Hogan, Music Director and Pianist, hails from the small town of San Juan Bautista, California. Patrick is a triple-crown musician: singer, composer/arranger, and pianist extraordinaire. His song styling for both classic and newly-composed pieces is reminiscent of performances by Michael Feinstein, Harry Connick Jr., and Chet Baker. The principal pianist at the Mayfair Supper Club in Las Vegas' Bellagio Casino, Patrick is a rising talent you don’t want to miss!

Bob Sachs is a Bassist, Arranger and Educator, who at age 6 started playing his first musical instrument, an accordion. Over the years Bob learned to play guitar, saxophone, piano, the bass guitar and his first love, the acoustic bass. He started playing professionally with the Armand Boatman Trio in Phoenix until he moved to Las Vegas in 1979, continuing to play bass in performances and recordings with many famous, well-known entertainers. Bob has participated in six USO Tours playing in Wayne Newton’s Orchestra.
