About The Event
In a rare opportunity, RAL hosts the Butter Quartet from the Netherlands performing a unique program of late 18th century chamber music – the “hot ticket” of its day. The Butter musicians are masters of their art: approachable, quirky, humorous – and supremely talented. They perform early music authentically, as the travelling European chamber music showmen once did in the 1700s. The music of Italian composers and their Austrian contemporary, Franz Joseph Haydn, will be performed on historically-shaped, gut-stringed violin, viola, baroque cello, and viola da gama – with more vibrato, and a warmer tone than usually heard today.
The program, Scintilla, highlights Italian composers who were also virtuosi: cellist Luigi Boccherini, and violinists Felice Giardini, Gaetano Pugnani, and, unique for the times, female composer and musician, Maddallena Laura Lombardini Sirmen. Renowned composer Haydn’s string quartets shaped the emerging nature of the genre for centuries to come.
